The first step in creating a self hosted site is registering a domain name. This domain is registered with Ionos. They provide a single mailbox with basic registration when the domain does not also subscribe to on of their hosting plans.

This site is hosted on my home network using a Raspberry Pi 4 with 4GB RAM running on the Raspbian 10 operating system, which is essentially the ARM version of Debian Linux. A pfSense router running on hardware from Protectli provides updates to the afraid.org DDNS service as well as port forwarding for http and https (ports 80/443) to the Raspberry Pi to which the router also provides a static IP address on network.

“LAMP” (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP) software is installed on the server. A WordPress installation drives this website. The Shuttle iMinimal WordPress theme provides the formatting for the site.
